– Arase complains about the procurement and maintenance of foreign dogs The Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase, has disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) had spent over N600 million on the procurement and maintenance of foreign dogs in the last few years, The Nation reports. According to Arase, so much was being spent on the importation of these dogs from foreign countries that rarely adapted to the country’s policing objective. However, speaking at the inauguration of the Police Dog Breeding Centre and Ultra-Modern Mounted Troop in Abuja on Thursday, March 10, Arase said: “This is certainly not sustainable in the face of the current dwindling resources.”

Arase said the force animal branch, which was built to aid the police acquire capacity to locally breed police dogs, had remained underutilised in the past. At such, the force continued to rely on importation of dogs and other animals for its operations. The IGP called for the effectively utilization of the force, which according to him, would save the nation some foreign exchange that would have gone into procurement of dogs from foreign countries. He said: “It is projected that at optimal breeding capacity, it can produce well above 200 dogs per year.” Meanwhile, Solomon Arase has presented a cheque of N10million to the families of 20 policemen who lost their lives in active service. According to Leadership, the policemen who died while fighting insurgency in the northeast including Bauchi, Borno, and Yobe states respectively were compensated through their next of kin.
